The Complete Website Backup Guide (2026)

Everyone agrees backups matter. Almost nobody tests their restores. Let us fix both.

The 3-2-1 rule

Keep 3 copies of your data, on 2 different media, with 1 copy offsite. Your host's nightly backup counts as one — you still need your own.

What to back up

  • Files: themes, plugins, uploads, custom code.
  • Database: posts, users, settings — the part you cannot re-download.
  • Configuration: DNS records, email settings, cron jobs.

How often?

Daily for active sites (blogs, stores). Weekly is fine for static brochure sites. Before every major update, take a manual backup — updates are the #1 cause of "I need a restore."

Test your restores

A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a backup. Once a quarter, restore to a staging subdomain and verify the site actually works. On K Host, one-click restore makes this a 5-minute job.
