What Is a CDN and Do You Need One?

A CDN (Content Delivery Network) copies your site's static files — images, CSS, JavaScript — to servers around the world, so visitors download from the nearest one.
When a CDN helps
- Your visitors are geographically spread out (India + US + Europe).
- You serve large media files or get traffic spikes.
- Every 100ms of latency matters (e-commerce checkout, for example).
When it is overkill
If 90% of your visitors are in India and your server is in Mumbai, a CDN adds complexity for minimal gain. Good hosting + caching gets you 90% of the benefit.
The bottom line
Start without one. Add a CDN when analytics show a global audience or when speed tests from far locations look bad. It is an optimization, not a requirement.
